Many common foot problems can be corrected without surgery or costly medications. Here are just a few of the most common:

Achilles Tendonitis

Achilles Tendonitis is the inflammation of the tendon between the calf muscle and the heel. Also known as Calcaneal tendon, Tendo Calcaneus and Tendon of Achilles, the Achilles Tendon is usually stressed by walking long distances, carrying heavy loads or during high-intensity sports activities.
This condition is usually associated with pronation of the foot (flat foot), not stretching before exercise and over training. In order to minimize injury, it is important to use custom arch supports (orthotics) as well as stretching and warm-up exercises before and after training.

Bunions

The abnormal pain and swelling of the joint at the base of the big toe that eventually causes the toe to point towards the outside of the foot. In severe cases, the big toe will cross or override the second toe. This is caused by long-term pressure from poorly fitting shoes and excessive pronation (flat footed ness).

Women are usually more susceptible to bunions due to the tight shoes they tend to wear. Wearing better fitting shoes and using custom arch supports(orthotics) to raise the arch and realign the foot will help reduce the pain associated with such a debilitating disorder.

Foot Pain

Foot pain is a term used to describe general foot discomfort. Foot pain can be caused by a variety of disorders including: Plantar Fascitis, Heel Spurs, Heel Pain, Metatarsalgia, Morton’s Neuroma,Bunions, fractures in the foot and a variety of other causes.

In most cases, proper footwear and custom arch supports (orthotics) will help relieve, reduce and even eliminate foot pain.

Heel Pain

Heel Pain is a discomfort in the heel, a general tenderness while walking, and soreness when getting out of bed in the morning.

Some of the most common causes of Heel Pain are Heel Spurs, Plantar Fascitis, Achilles Tendonitis, Posterior Tibial Tendonitis and flat footed ness (pronation). Additionally, wearing shoes that are too flimsy without support can cause heel pain.

Proper stretching, warm-ups and cool-downs before and after exercise is recommended.

Proper footwear and custom arch supports (orthotics) will reduce pressure on the heel and minimize the pain.

Heel Spurs

Heel Spurs or bone spurs are a bony over-growth on the heel bone. Heel Spurs are stresses on the ligaments and tendons on the bottom of the foot (Plantar Fascitis). Spurs are more prominent in people with Pronation (flat feet). Micro fractures or breaks in the heel bone are caused by strenuous activity and repetitive stress. As the body heels the fractures it develops into a bony spur. Spurs lead to severe pain and make it difficult to stand for any length of time.

Custom arch supports (orthotics) significantly enhances the arch of the foot, reduces pressure on all the tendons and ligaments and eases the pain.

Metatarsalgia

Metatarsalgia is the result of pain or discomfort of the forefoot (ball of the foot). Women’s high heel shoes are notorious for causing metatarsalgia due to the narrow toe box and high heel which drives or pushes the foot forward on to the ball of the foot. The ball of the foot takes all the pressure.

Wearing more supportive, lower-heeled shoes with cushioned soles and custom arch supports (orthotics) will distribute the weight of the body over a larger surface of the foot. This, in turn, greatly improves posture and walking comfort.

Morton’s Neuroma

Morton’s Neuroma is a severe throbbing pain that affects the nerves of the forefoot. The swollen nerves are compressed between the third and forth toes of the foot at the metatarsals (ball of the foot). Sometimes mistaken for metatarsalgia (pain in the forefoot), Morton’s Neuroma causes severe pain or even numbness of the third and forth toes. The metatarsal arch (the second arch of the foot), becomes collapsed which results in the pinching or compression of the nerve.

Supportive shoes and special, custom arch supports (Orthotics) will raise and support the arch of the foot reducing the pinching of the nerve and associated pain of Morton’s Neuroma.

Plantar Fascitis

Plantar Fascitis is the inflammation of the Plantar Facia (tendons, muscles, and ligaments of the bottom of the foot). This band of thick, fibrous connective tissue running from the heel to the toes becomes inflamed due to repetitive stresses like walking, running, and jumping. These stresses lead to pain and tenderness in the sole of the foot.

Special support shoes with custom arch supports (orthotics) will help reduce the trauma to the Plantar Fascia. Also, warm- ups, cool-downs and stretching are recommended before and after exercise.

Posterior Tibial Tendonitis

Posterior Tibial Tendonitis is caused by the over-stretching or straining of the Posterior Tibial Tendon located on the inside of the foot near the arch and the inside of the ankle. The condition is most often associated with flat feet where excessive pressure is put on the tendon.

Custom arch supports (Orthotics) will substantially improve the posture of the foot while reducing pressure on the tendon and relieving the associated discomfort.

Sesamoiditis

Sesamoiditis is a common ailment that affects the ball of the foot where the big toe connects. The small, fragile bones (Sesamoids) under the ball of the foot at the big toe often get inflamed or rupture with repetitive stress. A thinning of the fat pad of the forefoot can increase pressure on the Sesamoid bones causing inflammation (Sesamoiditis). Activities such as dancing, running, and even walking can aggravate the condition.

Well-padded soles combined with custom arch supports help in absorbing the impact and stresses to these tender bones.

Shin Splints

Shin Splints is pain in the lower, front part of the leg. This pain is caused by repetitive stress and over-exertion due to running, walking and sprinting. Shin Splints are common in athletes and sometimes with those people with severe flatfooted ness.

The condition of Shin Splints is not a splintering of the shin bone, but is a tearing of the connective tissue of the leg with some associated muscle fatigue.

Wearing supportive shoes with custom arch supports (orthotics), as well as stretching, warm-ups and cool-down practices before and after exercise, will help reduce the onset of Shin Splints.

Supination

Also known as High Arch or a Cavus foot, Supination is a severe “raised arch” of the foot. This type of foot disorder does not allow the foot to naturally absorb shock during normal activity because the arch is too rigid and the joints are deformed. Extreme pain and discomfort in the ankles, knees, hips and back are the result.

Custom arch supports (orthotics) help distribute the weight of the body over a larger area of the foot. Revolutionary materials used in the construction of the arch supports virtually eliminate the impact and potential damage and allows for maximum comfort.
